WORLD (IBF) light-welterweight champion Terry
Marsh got a scare in his first defence as he had
to survive shocking injuries by the right eye before
he retained his title and set up a possible bonanza
against Hector "Macho" Camacho by forcing the
incredibly brave Japanese Akio Kameda out of the
fight at the end of the sixth round at the Albert
Hall. Marsh later had 13 stitches.
IT LOOKS as if Michael Spinks will have a long wait to get
Mike Tyson into the ring. I'm beginning to wonder if it
might not cool off the hottest heavyweight attraction in
years.
Tyson's co-manager, Jim Jacobs, has not forgiven Butch
Lewis for pulling Spinks out of the HBO TV heavyweight
unification tournament.
The feeling in New York fight circles is that he's not going
to rush to make a Tyson-Spinks fight just because it now
suits Spinks' promoter.
WHEN T H E 1988 North West London divisional championships
are held, presumably at their usual Tottenham
Municipal Hall venue, missing f r om the programme for
only the second time since 1971 will be the entry at
featherweight of H. Henry (St. Pancras).
The o t h e r occasion it was missing, in 1974, t h e r e was an
entry in t h e programme of the Scottish Eastern District
championships in Edinburgh at lightweight of " H . Henry
( S p a r t a ) " , making an incredible run of 17 consecutive A BA
title challenges.
ENGLAND'S record in the annual Acropolis Cup appears
to indicate that standards may have risen since it came to be
regarded as a novice international tourney.
The first England team entered, in 1979, won four gold
medals. Two years later, in 1981, we scored the most
overwhelming success of any visiting nation in the 13-year
history of the competition by lifting six golds from an
eight-man side.
