SOUTH Africa's rugged Brian Mitchell retained his
World Boxing Association super featherweight (or
junior lightweight) title when his fight with Puerto
Rican challenger Joe Rivera ended in a draw after 15
gruelling, bloody rounds.
Mitchell was floored by a right-hander in the fourth
in the only knockdown of the
fight and suffered cuts over
both eyes and on the left cheekbone.
IRELAND has high hopes of a European championships
medal in Turin next month for featherweight Paul Fitzgerald,
who returned home from the United States to pick
up his third national senior title in superb style at the
National Stadium.
Showing outstanding ability to switch with lightning
speed from clever defensive work to sharp, precise hitting
with both hands, southpaw Fitzgerald delighted the fans as
he dazzled his opponents en route to the championship cup.
Bantamweight champion in 1982 and '83 and featherweight
title holder the following year, Fitzgerald emigrated
from his home in Arklow, County Wicklow, after a
disappointing performance in the Los Angeles Olympics,
LEE RIMMER (Salisbury) produced some fantastic
combinations to outpoint Honor Oak's stylist Paul Hersey
in the national schoolboy finals.
Rimmer continually produced stylish moves during three
fast-paced rounds, often having to think quickly to avoid
Hcrsey's solid shots.
Hersey often had Rimmer backed up, but failed to
capitalise fully and it was from the ropes that the
Merseyside boxer produced tremendous shots.
