Bowen's mission
PAUL BOWEN, the unbeaten West Ham super-middle,
says he wants to fight out of the Roy Jones Pensacola
camp in Florida.
He rang us asking for Jones' number but first has
to undergo another "nightmare" operation on brittle
hands.
"My career's gone stale here," said Bowen, whose
younger brother Michael is also undefeated as a pro
light-heavy.
"No disrespect to Matty Barney, but I should be
stopping fellas like him."
Charlie Magri-trained Barney held Bowen to a 10-
round draw for the Southern Area crown in Paul's last
fight last month.
Dodson D-day
ADRIAN DODSON will take on Hungary's former
European light-middleweight title challenger Lorant
Szabo at the Royal National Hotel bill on August 20
which features Ensley Bingham defending his British
11st crown against Delroy Leslie in the main event.
In all fairness, if southpaw Dodson cannot beat
Szabo, stopped here by Ryan Rhodes after upsetting
new WBO middleweight king Jason Matthews, we
know he's not going anywhere.
Szabo, as game as they come, almost shocked
France's Mamadou Thiam for the EBU title in April but
is not considered a dangerous puncher. For Dodson,
slowly rebuilding after two defeats in 1998, it would
appear a logical match.
"They both know they're fighting each other," said
promoter Jess Harding. "There can be no excuses
- Dodson knows he has to look good."
Romero homes in
DANNY ROMERO, having turned down a WBA
super-bantamweight title fight against Nestor
Garza in Las Vegas on September 18 and having
learned a WBA bantam championship clash with
Paulie Ayala cannot be made, will mark time with
a 10-rounder against Jesse Miranda in hometown
Albuquerque on August 14.
Romero has said he finds super-bantams too big
and Ayala, having beaten Danny's great rival
Johnny Tapia, is under orders to defend against
Fahoiu Sithchihai Condo of Thailand.
"I want to get back to my old style of fighting,"
says Romero. "Most importantly, I want to do it in
Albuquerque." Miranda is a fair opponent, having
gone 10 rounds with Tapia in Las Vegas in 1995.
MANCHESTER'S MICHAEL BRODIE will be
hoping the second defence of his European superbantamweight
title, against French southpaw SERGE
POILBLAN on the big Carlisle bill, proves less
contested than the first, writes DANIEL HERBERT.
That fight, in March, saw the Mancunian boxer-puncher
pound another Frenchman, Salim Medjkoune, to conclusive
stoppage defeat in nine rounds only for a rematch
to be ordered because the mandatory drug test was
carried out beforehand rather than after, as
specified under EBU rules.
