CEDRIC KUSHNER consistently puts on some of the
worst heavyweight matches around, but at least he
doesn't try to hide the fact.
The Press handouts in Detroit last weekend
carried some brief biographical information on the
undercard fighters.
For Jeff Lally, beaten by Poland's Albert
Sosnowski, it made rather ruthless reading: "He
lacks conditioning, physical strength, punching
power and cannot take a punch."
Lally, previously knocked out by David Tua,
described being hit by him as "Being hit in the
stomach by a wrecking ball".
Jeff claims he was outboxing Dane Brian Nielsen
before getting cut and stopped.
Teofilo charged
CUBAN amateur great Teofilo Stevenson, a
three-time Olympic champion, was arrested at
Miami airport last weekend and charged with
aggravated battery and resisting arrest with
violence after allegedly butting a United Airlines
worker.
The airline worker attempted to stop Stevenson,
48, who tried to force his way through a checkpoint.
Paramedics said the worker had a chipped
tooth and a cut lip.
Stevenson posted a $12,500 bond and was
allowed to return to Cuba.
Late again
AN irate reader from Liverpool left a message on
my voice mail while I was away in America, but
not his name or telephone number.
The purpose of his call was to complain about
the service of Boxing News, in particular the late
delivery of his paper.
As a reader for 15 years, he was perfectly
entitled to vent his frustration at having to get BN
on Saturdays instead of Fridays.
He seemed to think it was my fault, but I find
the situation equally intolerable and will, like all
the other complaints I receive, pass them on to
the publishers.
THERE are unlikely to be many better fights this year than
the five-knockdown thriller which saw Derek Roche of
Leeds retain his British welterweight title on points against
Hamilton challenger Scott Dixon at Ryton Sports Connexion.
WOLVERHAMPTON hod carrier Steve Savile
(pictured) took time off from the Black Country
building sites recently to build up his stamina in
a training spell at Sherwood Forest alongside
cruiserweight stablemate Nigel Rafferty.
That conditioning process paid off with his
second win in nine days, Steve living up to his
"Bomber" nickname to hammer away at a
bemused An/ Mittoo throughout an eight-twos.
It secured him a 79-72 verdict from referee
Terry O'Connor (officiating throughout) at the
opening of the North Staffs Sporting Club
season at Trentham Gardens.
