ONLY PAUL INGLE knows the reasons for
declining two 'world' title offers in favour of
a European featherweight title defence against
former WBO champion STEVE ROBINSON at
Scarborough Spa on March 6.
Even his manager Frank Maloney and trainer
Steve Pollard expressed surprise when Paul, after
sitting up until 4am, reached his decision.
But now I'm hearing a match against NASEEM
HAMED may be back on.

DES GWILLIAM of Birmingham died tragically in a car crash last
week. His vehicle landed in a dried-up river in Las Palmas, Gran
Canaria. He was 44.
As an amateur, stylist Des fought for England eight times. He also
competed in the 1975 European Championships as a lightweight for a
team which included Pat Cowdell and Charlie Magri.
Des, a real craftsman whose older brother Johnny also boxed pro, winning
and losing against Eurosport commentator Steve Holdsworth, was
managed by Nobby Nobbs from when he made his debut in 1977, and
rarely had an easy fight, thus only seven wins out of 24 (five draws) really
does not paint the picture of a dedicated, accomplished performer.

WAYNE ALEXANDER won the vacant Southern Area light-middleweight
title but was denied the glory which ought to go with such a victory
because of the shameful actions of OJAY ABRAHAMS, who was disqualified
for repeated fouls after just 90 seconds of their scheduled 10-rounder.
Referee Tony Walker threw out the Watford man after he stuck his nut in
Alexander's face - the fourth time he had committed that infraction,
although Mr Walker missed one of them - and then kneed him in the groin.
Being "up" for a contest is one thing, but what Abrahams, now 14-18-2
(9), did was unacceptable. He came out swinging frantically, almost
connecting with a right, but after just a few seconds was told off for putting
his head in.
