Next for Nelson
JOHNNY NELSON remains active and will
make the third defence of his WBO cruiserweight
crown against Tongan Sione Asipeli
at the Doncaster Dome on September 18.
Asipeli, rated No. 7 by the WBO and
trained by American Thel Torrence, scored
a six-round points win over Britton Thomas
on the Francois Botha-Shannon Briggs bill
in Atlantic City on August 7. The challenger
has 15 wins, one defeat and two draws.
His sole defeat was on points by James
Fryerson in April 1997 (since avenged on
points).
Fryerson, described as "useful" by
Sports Network, had won two of five (one
draw) before first meeting Asipeli, whose
British debut (against Tim Redman in May)
lasted three minutes 40 seconds.
Asipeli had originally been scheduled to
box John Keeton, but now finds himself
challenging Buster's more illustrious
stablemate. Promoter Frank Warren insists:
"He's tough as old boots".

Vargas plea
' IBF light-middleweight champion Fernando
Vargas, arrested last month and charged
with assault with a deadly weapon, has
declared his innocence.
The talented Califomian said: "Don't
judge me by the information you've heard
or read. I wish I could have got in front of
the cameras on the day it happened, but
my lawyers wouldn't let me. Eventually,
everyone will hear my story.
"I know not to be caught in a position
like this from now on. I always wanted to
become a world champion and a famous
one at that, but to see this all blown out of
proportion trips you out."
If convicted, Vargas faces eight years in
prison.

Floyd's mission
EXPECT Floyd Mayweather and Roberto
Garcia, WBC and IBF super-featherweight
champions respectively, to face each other
early next year.
For Garcia, this is the fight which will
propel him into the big league even though
he has won all his 32 fights, 24 early.
"People are always talking about
Floyd," says Roberto. "Rightly so. He's a
great fighter. Floyd deserves everything
he's got because he's so good, but I can
show people what kind of fighter I am by
going in against him."
Mayweather, who boxes in Las Vegas
on September 11, is eager to unify the
division, starting with new WBA champion,
Mongolian Lavka Sim. "I want to save the
best until last," he says.

CORNELIUS CARR, cut on the
right eye, saved the day for
his promoter Jonathan Feld,
who had the Middlesbrough
native booked to top the bill against
South African Oingaan Thobela on
October 31.
Because Carr destroyed any hopes
Sheffield's tall JASON BARKER may
have had of winning via injury when
body attacks forced an intervention
at 2-44 of t he third of a scheduled
eight-rounder.
