Tyson stews
MIKE TYSON will not be free to return
home today (Friday, March 26) as many
said.
The fallen idol will spend at least another
month behind bars.
Tyson's lawyers had made a proposal that
he become eligible for a work-release programme.
They believed it would have served him
better than remaining in jail.
Today marks the 50th day in prison for
Tyson, who, officially at least, must begin
serving 60 days for violating terms of his
Indiana probation once his sentence for
attacking two men in Maryland is up.
Had Iron Mike been released, he would
have been fitted with an electronic monitoring
device around his ankle so authorities
would know his whereabouts.
But County prosecutor Scott Newman
opposed the idea and Tyson is left to stew.
Lloyd joins Hide
THE WBO super-bantamweight title fight
between Marco Antonio Barrera and Paul
Lloyd has been moved to Frank Warren's
top-value Albert Hall promotion a week
tomorrow (Saturday April 3), when Herbie
Hide boxes Orlin Norris of America in the
main event.
The show also features the British and
Commonwealth heavyweight championship
match between Julius Francis and Danny
Williams, plus Ensley Bingham's British
light-middleweight title defence against
Nicky Thurbin.
The referee of the Bingham bout will be
Larry O'Connell, with promoter Frank
Warren saying: "Excuse the pun, but I'm
happy with Larry to referee - he'll do a good
job as usual."
MICHAEL BRODIE, an impressive stoppage winner
over Frenchman SALIM MEDJKOUNE in Manchester
two weeks ago, has been ordered to make his next
mandatory defence against British champion PATRICK
MULLINGS.
Mullings faces Scot DREW DOCHERTY first in
Peterborough on April 24, but the period for negotiations
sires on June 15.
! ARTUR GRIGORIAN, the WBO lightweight champion, is
after a unification match to bring him greater
recognition.
