FRANCOIS BOTHA, the South African heavyweight
who was beating Mike Tyson before getting
knocked flat by a right in the fifth in Las Vegas In
January, has fired controversial trainer Carlos
"Panama" Lewis.
Botha, training in Big Bear for an August 7 date
with Shannon Briggs, said the split came partly
because Lewis was not allowed in his corner.
But he admitted it was also because of the the
trainer's reputation for his part in the glovetampering
which left poor Billy Collins severely
beaten and bruised following a 10-rounder with
Panama's Luis Resto at Madison Square Garden in
1983.

HOW standards have dropped. Canadian Willard
Lewis, from Lac La Biche, is the next challenger
for Johnny Nelson's WB0 cruiserweight title in
Dagenham on August 7.
In May, Lewis struggled to draw over six rounds
with Texan journeyman Wesley Martin, whom he
had beaten on points over four in June 1996.
A national champion, Willard beat Dean De Luca
in three for the belt in May 1998 but De Luca had
won only five of nine contests going in.
Lewis, who has never beaten a world-class
opponent, is not a big cruiserweight either,
weighing around the 13st mark, whereas Nelson
has boxed at heavyweight.
If the Martin fight is any gauge, we should be in
for a short fight. The Texan went six bouts without
a win after losing to Lewis three years ago.

THE winner of next month's British lightmiddleweight
title clash between Ensley
Bingham and Delroy Leslie must defend
against undefeated Southern Area champion
Wayne Alexander.
Bingham and Leslie will meet at the Royal
National Hotel, London on August 20, the show
being co-promoted by Jess Harding and Noble
Art (Bruce Baker and Greg Steene). Bingham and
Leslie have both agreed in writing to face
Alexander should they win.
