REVISED main event on Frank Warren's September 4 show has the makings of
a genuine barn-stormer as much-improved Mancunian Michael Gomez, a
winner in Atlantic City this month, takes on Liverpool's relentless Gary
Thornhill in an all-action pairing for the British super-feathenveight title held
previously by Carlisle's Charles Shepherd, who recently won the IBO crown.
Despite the two boxers hailing from Lancashire and Merseyside respectively,
the show takes place at York Hall, Bethnal Green. Local favourites Garry Delaney,
Nicky Thurbin, Takaloo and Stephen Oates make up the undercard.
It's a big bonus for London fans, but one has to feel for the supporters of both
challengers who have to make the long journey.
BOXERS these days have far more to think about
than just setting the alarm to get up early for
roadwork.
Johnny Tapia, who has been offered a
rematch with WBA bantamweight champion
Paulie Ayala at Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas on
December 4 but will instead make a WBO title
challenge against Jorge Julio in late October, is
fighting a lawsuit filed against him by former
manager and trainer Paul Chavez, which is
expected to go to trial on August 23.
And police in Albuquerque have closed the case
on the murder of the boxer's mother, Virginia
Gallegos, who was stabbed to death in 1975.
The Albuquerque Journal, which obtained
police records, says Richard Espinosa, who died
in a traffic accident in 1983, was her killer.
BRITISH bantamweight champion Paul Uoyd
was fined £500 by the Board after testing positive
for caffeine, a stimulant, following his one-round
defeat by Marco Antonio Barrera at the Albert
Hall in April.
The Board accepted Lloyd's explanation and
John Morris said: "I'm glad it does not interfere
with Paul's career, but I'd like to emphasise how
careful boxers must be about anything, be it
medication or a soft drink, which they might take
in the build-up to a contest."
