Duvas split
THE internal struggle at Main Events,
the American promoters who staged
the first Sugar Ray Leonard-Thomas
Hearns fight in 1981 and later
steered Evander Holyfield, Pernell
Whitaker, Mark Breland, Meldrick
Taylor, Rocky Lockridge, Mike
McCallum and a host of other fighters
to major championships, has finally
been settled.
Lou, Dino and Donna Duva agreed
to sell their shares of the family
business to Lou's daughter-in-law
Kathy, who, along with lawyer Pat
English, retained voting control
following the death of Dan Duva.
Now the aforementioned trio are
expected to start up a new
promotional company.
The split came on October 4 after
months of haggling and all parties say
an "amicable financial settlement"
was reached.

Dunstan plan
THE road back to the top for Vauxhall
cruiserweight Terry Dunstan will
start with a warm-up on Lloyd
Honeyghan's show at the Elephant
and Castle on October 30, possibly
against Russian Sergei Korolev.
Dunstan was paid to step aside in
order to allow Alexander lliin and
Torsten May to dispute the vacant
European title in Germany on
November 27.
Dunstan's advisor, Colin McMillan,
says Terry received more for not
fighting than he was contracted to
earn to box lliin in Moscow last
month for the vacant belt.
After Dunstan's warm-up, Terry
will go straight into a fascinating
vacant British title fight against
Manchester's former WBO king Carl
Thompson in Peterborough on
December 4.

THERE is an additional title fight on the big
Coventry show on October 22 which features
Ensley Bingham against South African Mpush
Makambi, Richard Evatt against Mick 0'Malley
for the vacant Commonwealth super-featherweight
belt, Derek Roche in a British welter title defence
against Scott Dixon and Dean Pithie defending
his WBC International super-featherweight crown.
Now Midlander Spencer McCracken boxes in a
12-rounder against South African Peter Malinga
for the IB0 welterweight belt.
It is a good match, but Felix Trinidad and
James Page need not worry about the winner
challenging their superiority.

Jackie sits it out
COMMONWEALTH Games light-middleweight
bronze medallist Jackie Townsley was involved
in a car crash several weeks ago, suffering
damage to his knee cap which will probably
keep the one-fight pro prospect out of action for
the rest of the season.
Townsley is out of hospital and we wish him a
quick and full recovery.

RICKY HATTON has kept his feet firmly on the ground
even if many who follow him are caught up in the furore
following his fourth-round retirement win over former
Commonwealth champion BERNARD PAUL at Bowlers.

JAMES TONEY said Ramon Gartoey was going
down but again, the talented, calorificallychallenged
former 'world' champion was a
big disappointment in this tedious 10-round
clash of overweight mastodons.
Toney bipped, bopped and banged away to win
easily on points by 98-91, 98-92 and 98-93, but
how can he be serious about fighting Roy Jones at
light-heavy when he comes into the ring looking like
this?

TWO former Mexican WBC
champions notched victories
before a sparse crowd at the
Miccosukee Gaming Centre - but the
comeback trail nearly turned into a
minefield for ex-lightweight boss
CESAR BAZAN.

ABADLY bloodied Mickey Ward was
nearly sent crashing through the ropes
in round three but came battling back to
floor and leave Reggie Green limp and reeling
before their wild shoot-out was halted with just 20 seconds to go.
"That's one of the greatest fights I've ever seen," said famed trainer
Angelo Dundee of a savage 10-rounder.
The battle-scarred Ward, who has found a new lease on life at 34,
also pulled off one of the year's biggest upsets. Green was rated sixth
in the world by BN at light-welter.
