I RECEIVED a letter from former serviceman Ron
Harrison, who served in Cairo in 1940-41 with
former Scottish cruiserweight champion Bob
Scally.
Ron supplied me with a photocopy of an article
showing a picture of Scally shaping up for an
international match between the British forces
and a USA army ordinance team.
Scally was in training for a fight against Jack
Lord, the Northern Area heavyweight champion,
but Ron has the original photo and would like to
pass it on to Scally and his family, but does not
know how to reach them. If anyone has any idea,
please give me a call and I can forward details to
Ron.

NASEEM HAMED has started training in Detroit
at the legendary Kronk Gym. The WBO champion
shared the ring with former rival Tom "Boom
Boom" Johnson as well as Oba Carr and Bronco
McKart as he shadow boxed before working out
with trainer Emanuel Steward.
Also in the Detroit sweathouse was Thomas
Hearns, who boxes on the October 22 bill at the
Joe Louis Arena, where Hamed and Cesar
Soto, the WBC featherweight champion, were
expected to go head-to-head at a Press conference
yesterday. More details next week.

VITALI KLITSCHKO'S first defence of the WBO
heavyweight crown will be against unbeaten
American Ed Mahone in Oberhausen on
October 9. The show will feature a second WBO
title fight with lightweight champion Artur
Grigorian facing his mandatory contender,
American Michael Clark.

MODERN gyms are rather better equipped than the old sweat shops of
Lou Stillman's time. But although far more note is now taken of diet
and calisthenics, the basic training remains similar. Most fighters still
shadow box, hit the bags, spar and skip in time-honoured fashion.
At one time skipping was almost an art form and there were fine practitioners.
In 1962 Sugar Ray Robinson came to Britain to fight Terry Downes at
Wembley. Hie great Robinson was well past his best, but still drew the
crowds to see him train at Joe Bloom's Gym just off Cambridge Circus in
London's West End.
