THE thought had crossed my mind of
attending Frank Warren's Press
conference in Park Lane, London on Monday,
when HERBIE HIDE was available to discuss
his next defence of the WBO heavyweight title.
But, not surprisingly, the name of his next
challenger for his April 3 appearance at the
Albert Hall remained a secret.
By the time you read this it is possible the
identity of Herbie's next opponent will be
known, but, assuming Herbie meets a
creditable foe, the show shapes up well.
THE welterweight superbout between
OSCAR DE LA HOYA and FELIX TRINIDAD
was being discussed as we went to Press, the
provisional date being September 18 and the
stumbling block cable network Showtime, who
are reluctant to release the Puerto Rican from
his contract.
OSCAR GARCIA CANO of Spain has
pulled out of a mandatory European
lightweight title challenge against
Britain's Billy Schwer. a match promoter
Frank Maloney had lined up to take place
in London in April.
Ironically, Garcia Cano, stopped by
Schwer for the EBU title in October 1997,
is to challenge WBO champion Artur
Grigorian in Luebeck on March 13. As a
result, Coline Dunne, an excellent points
winner over Phillip Holiday in London
last weekend (see pages 6-7), was named
as Schwer's new mandatory challenger,
but Colin withdrew his nomination.
FLOYD MAYWEATHER, the WBC super-featherueight champion, wants
it to be known that he thinks Naseem Hamed is 'a knuckle head' for
falling out with his promoter, trainer and the media. "He should be getting
his act together and fighting real fighters like me!" said Floyd.
