NEIL SIMPSON of Coventry has been offered a WBO
light-heavy title crack at Dariusz Michalczewski of
Germany. Co-manager Johnny Griffin says the offer is
being "discussed". Johnny thanked Darren Corbett for
his challenge but said he is not in Neil's plans.
AUDLEY HARRISON'S decision to sign with the
BBC (a minimum of 10 fights over two years) is
magnificent news for all those involved in the
sport - including Sky TV, who lost out in the race for the
Olympic super-heavyweight champion's signature, and
those promoters whose offers were turned down.
It means for ttie first time since April 1995, when Frank Warren
signed a lucrative deal with Sky, regular boxing will return to
terrestrial television in Britain. That means the sport's profile will
surely increase.
DIEGO CORRAI.ES objected to Richard Steele as
referee of his WBC super-featherweight title fight
with FLOYD MAYWEATHER last weekend.
He contended May weather often trained at the Nevada
Partners Gym in Las Vegas run by the referee.
But Steele, who shocked everyone by announcing his
retirement days after the fight, ended up being third man
and this was just a small bone of contention between the
camps.
LENNOX LEWIS, who has exhausted the supply of topclass
challengers, has confirmed Hasim Rahman,
who holds the WBU heavyweight crown, will be his
next opponent
Rahman, who has two defeats on his record - both
by stoppage, the first by Lewis points victim David Tua
in December 1998, the second by Oleg Maskaev in
November 1999 - will bid for Lennox's 'worid' belts in
either Las Vegas or Monaco on April 21.
