DANNY WILLIAMS, the British and Commonwealth
heavyweight champion, was reportedly set to box
43-year-old American veteran Tim Witherspoon
for the WBU's vacant title next month.
It was announced as chief support to Mike tyson-Brian Nielsen
in Copenhagen on September 8, but Danish promoter Mogens Palle
disputed this because he had not been contacted by Williams'
promoter Frank Warren, then Tyson made it academic by pulling out
on Tuesday with lower back spasms.
Apparently, American Ray Mercer had been matched with Sherman
Williams on the undercard.
THERE will be no mending of the ways between
Anthony Farnell and Brian Hughes, the boxer
and trainer who parted company last month
after a l o ng association.
Hughes had aired his side of their break-up in this
column and on our letters pages following Farnell's
one-round defeat by Takaloo. Anthony, as is his
prerogative, has chosen to respond.
"I've been away on holiday and read Boxing News
on my return," said Farnell.
THE 11tb African Championships were held on the Indian ocean island of Mauritius from
May 14-20, with the host nation finishing second to Algeria in the medals table.
The Algerians won five gold and one bronze, while Mauritius won the same number of medals
(six), but four gold and one silver.
South Africa, Botswana and Madagascar were the other nations to win a title (one apiece).
The South African prize was lifted by light-heavy Daniel Venter, who lost to Courtney Fry at the
World Championships in June.
