BRITISH viewers will have to wait until August 20 to see
Adrian Stone's challenge for Shane Mosley's WBC
welterweight title in Las Vegas tomorrow (see p12-13).
The match will be shown on Boxing First on ITV's new
digital sports channel which launches on August 11.
And from next month Boxing First will be on every two
weeks instead of each month.
Forthcoming broadcasts will include Wladimir
Klitschko against Charles Shufford plus Paulie Ayala-
Clarence Adams.

West Ham's GARRY DELANEY Is still the British Masters cruiserweight champion after
stopping CHRIS P. BACON of Manchester with just one second left in a gruelling 10-
rounder.
Referee Phil Kane's intervention drew some boos, but made sense. After nine nip-and-tuck
rounds, Delaney went up a gear to give Bacon a pasting in the last and the Manchester man
was sold out, unable to get out of the way of blows, when the stoppage came.
Sure, there was only one second left, but the referee is not required to keep time, rather to
look after the health of the boxers. As when Richard Steele stopped a battered Meldrick
Taylor two seconds from the end against Julio Cesar Chavez, who can say one more punch
might not have caused serious damage?
Chris had been tired for several rounds, having relied on a high workrate to keep himself
in the fight and subdue the champion, who provided the better quality - when he threw
punches.

THE final curtain fell on BILLY SCHWER'S
three-month reign as IBO lightwelterweight
champion and distinguished
career when, against all odds, he was
stopped at 1-39 of the 11th round by
Argentine PABLO SARMIENTO at the
Conference Centre.

ARUBBER match between PATRICK
MULLINGS and MICHAEL ALLDIS would
be most welcome following their
superb 12-rounder at the Conference Centre
which, as expected, went down to the wire
and is a strong contender for domestic fight
of the year.

ALMOST three years ago, in the
shimmering grey-gold light
beneath the canopy of Madison
Square Garden, a fighter preparing to
hit the scales bore an uncanny
resemblance to boxing's all-time finest,
Sugar Ray Robinson.
The dark sheen of hair, the eyes
which sparkled with vitality, and the
lean, perfectly-conditioned physique
all served to remind onlookers of a man
born Walker Smith Jr., from Detroit,
Michigan, driver of a pink Cadillac and
winner of the world middleweight title a
staggering five times.
