DANNY WILLIAMS' British and Commonwealth heavyweight title rematch with JULIUS
FRANCIS, the only man to have beaten him, is "a walk in the park," according to trainer
Jim McDonnell.
That is not an attempt to get under Francis' skin, but Jim's honest opinion based on what he has
seen of his fighter since Danny dislocated his shoulder in October.
"A fighter's punch resistance starts to go when he gets into his thirties," said McDonnell. "I noticed
against Mike Tyson that Julius was going down from punches which only clipped him.
"When Danny hits him flush, Julius is going to go. Danny's going to come out blasting and he can
do it in the first, the eighth or the last.
"I've never seen this sort of anger in him before. It's as if he's going into a world title fight.
"Last weekend after the Takaloo fight Danny wouldn't stay in Manchester because he wanted to go
home to do his running in the morning.
"He will not let Julius beat him. He has looked at the domestic scene completely differently since
going to America for sparring. That opened his eyes.
"Danny won't entertain the word 'lose'. No matter what Julius comes out with, it won't be enough.
Julius hasn't got Danny's mind in his back pocket like he thinks.
"Danny hits so much harder now and I don't believe Julius will win a round."
McDonnell's faith in his charge is so great he believes Williams can go all the way to win a
legitimate version of the heavyweight crown.
NOTTINGHAM'S Nicky Booth gets an unexpected
'world' title chance when he meets Colombian
Jose Sanjuanelo for the vacant IBO bantamweight
belt at the Wembley Conference Centre tomorrow
(Saturday July 14).
The fight replaces Michael Ayers' IBO lightweight title
defence against Ghanaian James Armah, which fell
through when Ayers injured his back. It is now hoped to
put that fight on in September.
THE British super-bantamweight title rematch between champion Michael
Alldis of Crawley and Harrow southpaw Patrick Mullings goes ahead on
the Wembley bill three months after it was originally scheduled for the
same venue.
April's match fell through when Alldis suffered a shoulder problem, but
Mullings boxed a six-rounder against Alexander Tiranov - and had to get off the
deck to stop the Russian in the third round.
They previously met for the vacant British crown at York Hall in November
1999, with Michael taking a close one on points.
Before that, they met in the 1992 ABA bantamweight final, with Mullings
taking a unanimous decision.
