JASON MATTHEWS, former WBO middleweight
champion, was jailed for nine months for breaking
the nose of his former girlfriend in an "unprovoked act
of domestic violence".
The Hackney puncher, who shattered Ryan Rhodes
in two rounds to win the title but lost it in his first
defence and has not boxed since (Nov 1999), pleaded
guilty to actual bodily harm and affray last November.
The case took place at Southwark earlier this month.
The judge told Matthews: "As a trained boxer you
have responsibilities over and above those of an
ordinary citizen."

SHANE MOSLEY is to compete against the likes of
famous sprinter Michael Johnson in an American
superstars competition to be aired on ABC TV in the US
on May 27, less than two months before his next fight.
Mosley, a champion weight-lifter in his college days,
is scheduled to defend his WBC welterweight title in
Las Vegas on July 21. No challenger has been named,
but the boxer's promoter, Cedric Kushner, ruled out
WBA title-holder Andrew "Six Heads" Lewis.

WHAT with Hasim Rahman holding the world heavyweight crown and William Joppy
taking on Felix Trinidad in New York tomorrow (see pages 12-13), manager Stan
Hoffman is on top of the world.
"All of a sudden my life is so exciting," he said. "People laughed at me when I said
Rahman would beat Lewis, and that's understandable.
"But I believe Joppy will knock Trinidad out."
How has Joppy been in training, I asked? "Holy Mackerel!" exclaimed Stan. "A load
of journalists went out to watch him the other day and afterwards all of them said he'd
knock out Trinidad. That's how good he looked.
"Listen, I'll take the win. But William is beyond belief. He's being trained now by
Rock Sims, who used to train Adrian Davis, Rahman's coach."
Upsets are something of a Hoffman speciality. As I said a few weeks ago, Stan was
with Iran Barkley when he poleaxed Tommy Hearns.
"What about Michael Bentt when he knocked out Tommy Morrison?" added Hoffman.
