» * #AYNE ALEXANDER, British light-middleweight
l r champion, seems to be everywhere these days.
Last Friday at the All Stars amateur boxing show in
Paddington he was quietly supporting his friend, heavyweight
Eric Ghandi, and on Sunday afternoon at the Elephant
& Castle Leisure Centre scouting, I presume, Gary Logan,
the fellow-Croydon man who stopped Spencer Fearon in two.
Alexander, who stopped Fearon as an amateur, is a
dynamite puncher in an explosive domestic division, but the
trouble is he desperately wants to make the Lonsdale Belt
his own property yet can't find a challenger for a July 28
comeback date.

DARREN CORBETT, the Belfast light-heavy who
has not boxed since March 2000, is coming
back on June 16 in Yonkers, New York.
Corbett is to box American Tyler Hughes,
knocked out in one by Joe Calzaghe in 1997, on a
show staged by a newcomer to the promotional
game, Kevin Baldwin.
The same night in the Big Apple, but at the
Aquaduct Raceway, sees Junior Jones continue
his comeback against an opponent to be named.

DANNY WILLIAMS takes a gamble when he defends his
Commonwealth heavyweight title against Aussie-New
Zealand puncher KALI MEEHAN on the Culshaw-Napa
York Hall show tomorrow.
It's the Brixton man's first fight since dislocating his right
shoulder against Mark Potter last October - a bout he looked
certain to lose until flooring the Walthamstow man with a
sensational left uppercut in round six.
History shows fighters are usually never the same after a
shoulder injury. A dislocated shoulder cost Colin McMillan his
WBO featherweight belt against Ruben Palacio in 1992 and the
Barking stylist never recaptured peak form.
Perhaps it's different with the heavies, who can always end a
fight with one blow; sweet boxers such as McMillan need to
throw more punches, putting more strain on the
injured area.

DENBEATH'S Four Nations light-welter gold
medallist Kevin Anderson and Scottish
welter champion Colin McNeil (Fauldhouse)
were both in magnificent form for a Scottish
Eastern District select against a Royal Navy team
from HMS Nelson, Portsmouth.
The visitors were led by Petty Officer Quinton
Shillingford, who was given an award by
organising Denbeath officials. However, inside
the ropes the Eastern District Select Squad won
all the honours, triumphing 4-0.

FINCHLEY BC, not content with their recent
successful trip to Las Vegas, travelled to St
Neots in Cambridgeshire with a trio of boxers
to support the St Neots Club dinner show at the
Longsands College.
First up for Finchley was Tommy Holohan,
who met Luke Castle from Golden Ring,
Southampton. Both displayed skills in a very
close contest, but the straight jabbing of young
Tommy (13) earned him the majority decision.
Two bouts later came national schoolboy
champion Ashley Sexton, against Danny
Shinkwin from Bushey ABC. Danny, looking to
reverse an earlier defeat, tried to overwhelm his
talented opponent from the opening bell, but to
no avail.
