TWO days after his comeback dreams were shattered (see pages 12-13), former
four-weight 'world' champion PERNELL WHITAKER, one of the modern greats, was
admitted to hospital with seizures.
It has not been confirmed what made the boxer collapse in his bathroom on Sunday
night.
Whitaker's problems with alcohol and drugs are well documented and a recording of
the 911 emergency phone call from a woman who found Pernell alleged he had taken
an overdose and said it was "possibly cocaine", though no substance was found.
His family initially kept details private, but the boxer issued a statement, saying:
"There's no cocaine or anything. I hurt my shoulder [in the fight], got some strong medication,
mixed it with alcohol and had a reaction. That was on the plane back home.
"When I got home, I took another pill, a shower and started shaking."

UNDEFEATED Newbridge prospect GAVIN REES dropped
down to feather to collect a WBO Inter-continental title,
stopping Bulgarian VLADIMIR BOROV in the fourth of a
12-rounder.
Victory came as easily as obtaining permission from the
organisation to sanction the match.
After Paul Halpin, then southpaw Brian Carr (who couldn't
make the weight at short notice), fell through as opponents, Rees
was left with a less serious test.

KEVIN MCINTYRE (lost 9ibs)
bounced back from a stunning
stoppage defeat to secure an
impressive victory on Katherine
Morrison's last dinner show of
the season at the Thistle Hotel.
He scored a 60-53 six-threes verdict from
ref Victor Loughlin over former British and
Commonwealth welterweight title

FALKIRK'S stocky BIAGIO FALCONE made it a hat-trick over IAN TOBY
when he stopped the South Shields trier at 1-31 of the second of a fourthrees
at the St Andrew's Sporting Club.
Falcone took the initiative from the opening bell, prodding jabs and
bludgeoning rights finding the range with comparative ease.
Toby tried desperately to parry and return the fire, but his fragile features
were soon letting him down.
Blood started streaming from the corner of his left eye as Biagio increased
the tempo still further, making life extremely difficult for his old foe.
A succession of jolting jabs and punishing right uppercuts found Toby's
head in the second, the attack culminating in a whacking right clattering hard
against the game northerner's temple.
