THE relentless aggression of Steve Early, coupled with an
unquenchable will-to-win, proved too much for the tarnished
skills of Ken Buchanan in their British light-welterweight
title final eliminator.
Buchanan, 35, was out-hustled and out-gunned over 12
memorable rounds at a packed Tower Ballroom, dropping a
118-117 decision on referee Harry Gibbs' score card.
The former world lightweight champion is not the fighter
of six years ago, but it would be grossly undervaluing Early's
performance to call Ken a spent force.
BIRMINGHAM welterweight Lloyd Hibbert emerged as a genuine British
title contender after his thrilling eight round points win over Joey Singleton
at the Midlands Sporting Club.
AYUB KALULE, Danish-based holder of the WBA lightmiddleweight
tide, has beaten Britain's WBC champion
Maurice Hope to the much-coveted meeting with TV
superstar Sugar Ray Leonard.
Leonard, WBC welterweight champion, will challenge for Kalule's
title in late May or early June, for a purse of around $5m.
Kalule's purse is believed to be around $lm, although no figure has
been announced.
SEVERAL big names fell by the wayside in the opening
stages of the Midland ABAs at Coventry and Birmingham
last week.
England international middleweight Michael Christie
slumped to a shock second round knockout loss against Bell
Green's Junior Farquarson in the only bout of the Coventry
championships.
