B R I T I S H boxing fans were saddened that Maurice Hope,
the talented and likeable man f r om Antigua who came to
Hackney in L o n d o n as a nine-year-old, was f l a t t e n e d by the
accomplished Wilfred Benitez, a P u e r t o Rican born in New
York.
T h e loss of another world title by Britain isn't the cause
for the sadness so much as the fact that Hope, for years
u n d e r r a t e d , will be dismissed in America as just another
British fighter who showed guts and skill but was never a
great world champion.

IN front of a disappointingly small crowd of only about a thousand, 38-yearold
Jorgen Hansen retained his European welterweight title with a clear
points win over the official challenger Richard Rodriguez of France.

A GREAT world champion ends an honourable career in the
unlikely precincts of the Central Pier, Morecambe, on Thursday:
Ken Buchanan's last fight will be against unbeaten
youngster Alan Lamb in the Lancashire seaside resort.
It' s a far cry from the steamy heat of San Juan, where
Buchanan w o n the world crown f r om Ismael Laguna almost 11
years ago.
