THIS time last year we had three world champions
- middleweight Alan Minter, lightmiddle
Maurice Hope, and lightweight Jim
Watt. Now they're all ex-champs, and our last
finger-hold on world title status is through
junior-light Cornelius Boza-Edwards, a Ugandan
who threatens to do all his future fighting
in America.

FLYWEIGHT powerhouse Charlie Magri gave
his world title aspirations a boost by dispatching
Jose Herrera, ranked No. 10 by the WBC, in
less than two minutes.
During that time the Mexican had been
floored twice and was counted out as he groped
along the ropes, near his own corner, in a vain
bid to haul himself from the floor.

T E N years ago, at a local amateur show somewhere in
the North-East, I was talking to Maurice Cullen who
won the Lonsdale Belt outright as British lightweight
champion. In between bouts, Maurice was enthusing
about a kid he was coaching down at Hartlepool,
called George Feeney.

JOHN 'THE HEAT' VERDEROSA outpointed Enrique Solis over 12 rounds at
the Felt Forum to retain the United States Boxing Association junior-lightweight
title he won from Robert Mullens last March.
The Italian hot-shot from Staten Island dominated the action completely with
his non-stop attacks but never came close to scoring a knockdown as he usually
does.

THE biggest night of John Feeney's career ended in
heartbreak and controversy when- the Hartlepool bantam
was adjudged a clear points loser to European champion
Valerio Nati.
