BETHNAL GREEN's Colin Derrick treated his home
town supporters to a highly impressive display of punching,
halting outclassed JEFF ASPEL in the third of their
scheduled six rounder.

heavyweight division! And John L. Gardner hasn't exactly
helped the situation by tossing in the British crown he won
when stopping Billy Aird in five rounds over two years ago.
Then it was Joe Bugner who had left the domestic
heavyweight cupboard bare by throwing in the title. The
Boxing Board had to call on Gardner and Aird to meet for
the vacant championship.
Marvelous Marvin Hagler made a smashing first defence of
his world middleweight title before a packed crowd of
around 9,000 at the Boston Garden as he hammered the tall,
previously undefeated Fulgencio Obelmejias, of Venezuela,
into defeat in the eighth.
The end came just after 20 seconds of the round. A series
of lefts and rights to the head sent Obelmejias lurching into
the ropes and Mexican referee Octavio Meyran signalled the
finish.
PLENTY of leather was flying in the NABC Class, c or
senior finals, but science was decidedly lacking, as nine pairs
battled it out at the London Hilton for the 1981 titles, with
the chance of a step-up into the Young England squad and
hence the international limelight providing an added lure.
"It was a disappointing show," commended ABA national
coach Kevin Hickey. "There were a handful of fair performance
and bouts, but the overall picture was dismal, I am
afraid.
