MARVIN HAGLER, whose ripping southpaw punches tore
Alan Minter apart in three rounds last September, is back in
the ring again tomorrow (Saturday, January 17) when he
makes his first defence of the world middleweight championship
against Fulgencio Obelmejias, of Venezuela.
The Minter fight, at Wembley Arena, saw Hagler denied
the right to relish his victory due to the barrage of objects
hurled in his general direction.
IT'S been a long, long time since the welterweight division
has been packed with such a stunning array of talent. WBA
boss Thomas Hearns casts an awesome — almost unbeatable
- shadow over the division, while WBC title holder Sugar
Ray Leonard seems an equally devastating fighting
machine.
NINE pairs met in the 1981 NABC Class B finals,
presented within the framework of a mixed dinner
show by the Home Counties ABA at Luton's Cesars
Palace night spot, and Triumph ABC's Eamon
Considine impressed most amongst the 16-17 yearolds,
deservedly winning the best boxer nomination.
There was a full house in attendance, a great atmosphere
to boot and the organisation was excellent,
but overall standards dipped below those of the
Class A finals.
Warwickshire's Eamon Considine - somewhat
reminiscent in style to his brother John, who ruled
the NABCs a few years back — was chased around
in the opening minute by Repton's slambang Nigel
Downer in an all-orthodox clash.
