JOEY GIBILISCO, an unranked Italian with only 19 wins
in 27 fights, proved yet again that there's no such thing as a
safe bet in boxing by smashing Derry southpaw Charlie
Nash to defeat in the sixth of their scheduled 12-rounds to
take the Irishman's European title.
Nash, fighting on his 30th birthday, was counted out
after two minutes 44 seconds with his head resting on the
bottom rope. He was badly dazed, and lay there for several
minutes after Swiss referee Franz Marti had completed the
count.
MOSTof the interest in a good-value undercard at Dalymount
Park centred on the pro start of former amateur star
Barry McGuigan, of Monagham, who scored an easy tworounds
win over Manchester's Selvin Bell in a scheduled
six-rounder.
ONE of the brightest boxers I ever saw win a British
championship was Jimmy Walsh from Chester. He
discovered himself, but was brought along by the
Vairo brothers of Italian descent, Dominic and Anthony,
who played a big managerial role in the Fight
Game, especially around Liverpool, for so many
years.
