OFFICIALS of the Central Area Council will have an inquiry after
promoter Charlie Atkinson's five fight bill cut up to just three
contests through the non-arrival of John Lindo (Bradford) and Ray
Price (Swansea). This left Sheffield's Glen Rhodes and Liverpool's
George Schofield without opponents and with Rhodes declining to
tackle Schofield it left the fans short on contests.
JOHN L. GARDNER looks to break into the world top 10
with a win over Puerto Rican heavyweight Osvaldo Ocasio.
And manager Mickey Duff is confident victory will seal a
lucrative title fight with WBC champion Larry Holmes: a
prospect viewed with trepidation by true fight fans.
Ocasio, 25, seems a sensible choice of opponent with the
stakes so high. He carries world class credentials, but recent
results suggest he's well on the downward slide.
REPTON'S two former ABA finalists, lightweight Tony Bowden and
heavyweight Ray Tabi, went out of this year's championships at the first
stage when the North East Divs. were held before the usual capacity crowd
at York Hall.
ENGLAND light-middleweight star Nick
Wilshire bowed out of the ABA championships at
the Western Counties Finals, kayoed by a bout of
'flu.
His place at the event, held at Exeter University,
was taken by rival Cameron Lithgow (Swindon)
who had little trouble in overpowering Kirk Stevens
(Devonport), the referee stopping the contest
in the first.
