ALAN MINTER's hopes of regaining the world
middleweight title now depend on Mustafa Hamsho
defeating Marvin Hagler, the man who ended Minter's
six-month reign in September.
Immediately after Hamsho's 10-rounds split decision
win over Minter in the same ring at Caesars
Palace Sports Pavilion in which Alan became world
champion, the Syrian's manager Paddy Flood
promised that Minter would get the first shot at the
title should Hamsho beat Hagler in their WBCordered
title fight later this year.
NEWPORT puncher DAVID BOMBER' PEARCE
hammered a warning to the country's top heavyweight
contenders with dramatic first-round victory over Islington
Muslim ISHAQ MUHAMMAD HUSSEIN at boxing's
newest venue, the palatial Porter Tun Rooms.
LARRY HOLMES is cast in the old familiar role when he defer ds
his World Boxing Council heavyweight title against Leon Spinks at
Detroit tonight (Friday), that of an underrated champion battling
for recognition.
Holmes dearly wants to be the "people's champion" but after nine
successful title defences, and a career of 37 consecutive wins, he
seems no nearer.
I HAVE just seen the Maurice Hope-Wilfred Benitez WBC
light-middleweight fight for the second time on TV and,
knowing the result, I could fully appreciate the style, confidence
and supreme ability of Benitez.
We all knew Maurice to be a brave, super fit, hard hitting
boxer with a good chin and, prior to this fight, would have
backed him to give a first class account of himself against
Thomas Hearns, Ray Leonard etc.
