CORNELIUS BOZA EDWARDS gets his biggest payday to date when he
makes his second defence of the WBC junior-lightweight title against Rafael
"Bazooka" Limon in August.
Boza will get $100,000 for the defence, $25,000 more than the $75,000 he got for
meeting No 1 challenger Bobby Chacon in Los Angeles.
The date is set for either August 15 or 22. The venue is Italy: from a choice of either
Sicily, Rimini, or Campione. American TV will be showing the fight live in the U.S.A.
Boza, of course, won the title by outpointing Limon in the U.S.A. last March in a
fight marred by fouls on the part of the Mexican.
All of Boza's championship fights will now have been shown on American TV. The
Limon and Chacon fights, the last in particular, have been wars.
The original plan was for Boza to fight in Gabon on the country's Independence Day
celebrations but this fell through when the sponsors failed to come up with funds
THE frustration of being one of boxing's "bridesmaids" is
clearly telling on bantamweight Dave Smith.
The Nearly Man tag doesn't sit well on the slim snoulders of the
diminutive Londoner, and he aims to bury the reputation as a
perennial contender once and for all by taking a British title at the
third time of asking. Charlie Magri and ill-fated Johnny Owen
quashed his previous brave bids - now stablemate John Feeney
stands between Dave and glory.
VERBAL sparring has begun as Sugar Ray Leonard and
Thomas Hearns count the days to September 16 when the
real thing will happen in the ring at Las Vegas. The fight for
the undisputed welterweight championship has caught the
imagination like no fight since the 1971 meeting between Ali
and Frazier.
EVIDENCE of the widening gulf between the two sides in
the ABA power struggle was produced at the annual meeting
of the North East London division last Sunday when antiestablishment
leader Bill Cox launched a blistering attack on
National Coach Kevin Hickey.
Speaking in the oak panelled hall of Fairbairn House
Club, Plaistow, the former ABA Secretary examined Hickey's
track-record over the last year as an England cornerman
saying he found it "rather worrying
MIKE WEAVER will, after all, defend his WBA
heavyweight title against James "Quick" Tillis.
The fight will take place in September, said promoter Bob
Arum, at a venue to be arranged.
On the same bill Gerry Cooney meets a selected opponent
with Randall "Tex" Cobb said to be on the short list.
Weaver and Cooney will then meet in February for the
WBA title..
