WBC lightweight champ Jim Watt (pictured after his win over Sean
O'Grady) is going to America for a rumoured $1m payday to defend the
title against Alexis Arguello. See page 24.
I FIRST saw Eddie Smith in March, 1978. He looked
forbidding as he prepared to do combat with Leicester's
Steve Fen ton at the Arden Sporting Club, Birmingham. He
swaggered his compact frame of coiled muscle, then sprang
into life as the first bell sounded.
THE final bout of the 1980 New York boxing season was a
wild and weird light-welterweight main event in which
world-rated Domingo Ayala scored a unanimous decision
over Adriano 'Nani' Marrero of the Dominican Republic.
What made the contest so exciting was the fact that Marrero
came on unusually strong after a pathetic performance
in the first four rounds. His countrymen were booing him
and I was thinking evil thoughts and jotting down derogatory
remarks about him.
BOXING is a family affair for the Dykes brothers of
Burscough. They are (left to right): David (15), Wayne
(19) and Shaun (18). David and Shaun are members of
Burscough ABC where father. Ken is trainer. Wayne
boxes for Liverpool's Holy Name ABC.
