ONCE upon a time Roberto Duran was the most feared
fighter in the business. People were loath to share a room
with him, let alone share a ring. He was mean, cruel,
vicious, a street-fighter who loved a brawl more than he
loved a good steak.
In a professional career taking in 72 fights spread over 14
years, Duran terrorised the lightweight division as had few
champs before him.
In 12 title defences, only one challenger was on his feet at
the final bell. He racked u p 55 knockouts and only lost one
fight. The man who beat him was flattened twice in return
bouts.

IN THE early fifties the featherweight division was probably stronger in
depth than at any other time. In Boxing News dated April 15, 1953, I rated
three Londoners, respectively Sammy McCarthy, Freddie King and Charlie
Tucker, as leading contenders to champion Ronnie Clayton. Sammy
went on to win the title, the other two weren't so lucky.
There was great friendly rivalry between Freddie from Wandsworth and
Charlie from Cam|berwell. Both were fine amateurs, both turned pro in
1950, and quite naturally both had most of their fights in London, so I was
fortunate enough to see them.
