ALEX BLANCHARD is a well-mannered gentleman,
a smart and snappy dresser, who handles
himself according to the rules of etiquette, and whose
appearance hardly gives a hint of his fistic activities.
Yet he is the European light-heavyweight champion,
with a fine record of 27 wins (of which 24 have
come inside the distance), one loss and a draw.
PROMOTER Doug Bidwell is building a fire under his big
heavyweight headliner featuring Glenn McCrory and John
Westgarth, scheduled to blast off at the Gateshead Leisure
Centre on Tuesday.
WHAT a strange year this has been for Mexican boxing. They were celebrating the fact
that they had four world champions, and then, in the space of just a few weeks, Jose Luis
Ramirez, Juan Meza and Daniel Zaragoza are beaten.
When you add to these Gabriel Bernal failing to lift the WBC flyweight title in
Thailand, Francisco Montiel losing to Jung Koo Chang and Marcos Villasana blowing his
world title shot', it has certainly been a bad spell for Mexico.
The only bright spots have been the form-of Julio Cesar Chavez and the fact that Meza
lost his title to Lupe Pintor.
