IBF heavyweight champion Larry Holmes closed to within two wins of Rocky Marciano's record of 49 straight
victories when he stopped challenger David Bey in 10 rounds at Las Vegas at the weekend. Holmes has said that he
will retire on June 9, but it seems likely that he will fight on if the offer is right. See pages 12-13.

BRITAIN'S heavyweight hope Frank Bruno takes on a
tough test on the Wembley show when he meets former
European champion and world title challenger Lucien
Rodriguez of France over 10 rounds.
It is a good match for Bruno, as the experienced
Frenchman is a skilful, durable campaigner who has mixed
with some of the world's best.

AFTER the excitement of his magnificent win over Juan
LaPorte it's back to earth for Barry McGuigan as he
defends his European featherweight title against French
champion Farid Gallouze at Wembley on Tuesday.
All the signs suggest that it will be a very one-sided
fight, so superior is the world class McGuigan's record to
that of the challenger.

BOBBY WELLS' hopes of a repeat performance of his
"second time lucky" triumph in a previous ABA series
were dashed as he was outpointed by Guy Williamson in
the London ABA super-heavyweight final.
Wells, 24, had come in as a late substitute for Muyiwa
Oyebola (All Stars). Oyebola had beaten Wells in the
semi-finals seven days earlier but then injured his hand at
work.

MARK BROWN, a former England Schools representative,
was outgunned by Neil Ridings, another former
Schools champion, in a rousing final bout at Copland
School, Wembley, on Saturday (March 2), in the Schools
ABA quarter-finals.
