JIMMY CABLE suffers the first of two knockdowns in his British lightmiddleweight
title defence against Prince Rodney at Hastings on Saturday.
Rodney knocked out Cable in just two minutes to regain the title he never
lost in the ring. See pages 2-3.

WHEN the Argentinian heavyweight Daniel Falconi won
the Latin American a m a t e u r title he was hailed as the best
prospect at his weight since Oscar Bonavena.
Falconi turned professional in Italy and ran up a few
wins, but then flopped badly, being knocked out by little
Peter Mulendwa (who was knocked out by Frank Bruno)
and held to a draw by Andy Gerrard, and seemed to be on
the road to nowhere.

NO AMBITIOUS boxer could have had a more encouraging
background than Brian London. When he was a mere baby, he and his
brother Jack, were often taken by their mother to watch Dad fight in a
small arena at West Hartlepooll She would hold him in her arms, while
Jack was hoisted on to the burly shoulders of a standing spectator.
Those were the days of the great depression, when the grass in the
shipyards stood waist high and there were long queues at the Labour
Exchange; when skilled men tightened their belts and wore their boots
out in hunger marches; when there was very little social security and a
means test to suffer before getting a pitiable dole.
