ANDERS EKLUND celebrates his stunning fourth-round stoppage of Norwegian
Steffen Tangstad for the European heavyweight title in Copenhagen last Saturday.
Official challenger Frank Bruno will have a fight on his hands against the giant
Swede. Report and more pictures — pages 2-3.
EUROPEAN welterweight champion Lloyd Honeyghan. Bermondsey (lOst 6lbs) had an
easier time than he could possibly have expected in hammering former world title
challenger Roger Stafford of Philadelphia to defeat in the ninth round of the Albert Hall
main event.
BARRY McGUIGAN drew rave reviews from the American
CBS TV commentary team for the sparkling points
victory over ex-champ Juan LaPorte.
Sugar Ray Leonard, Gil Clancy and Tim Ryan supplied
a liberal sprinkling of superlatives, and why not?
McGuigan was marvellous and the famous roar of the
King's Hall, Belfast crowd made it that much more thrilling.
THE Royal Navy and the Army shared the spoils with si\
titles each at the Combined Services Championships at the
Military Boxing Centre.
For the Navy, thirsting for revenge following their 8-2
beating from the soldiers in the Team Championship, it
was a blistering return to form, though there was no
doubt that the outstanding performance of the night came
from Army bantamweight KEITH HOWLETT for the
style and power he displayed against Navy champion
DAVE POPE.
THE DATE was June 28, 1947. Lowestoft welterweight
Mickey Thompson was just about to leave for Wisbech for
the most important contest of his career, a fight against
Keith Weston for the Eastern Area title.
But when Snowey Edwards called for him Mickey
noticed his manager Albert Green was conspicuous by his
absence. When he enquired what had happened, Snowey
said: Hes been delayed by a business appointment.
Nothing to worry a b o u t ."
When the contest was due to start Albert still hadn't
arrived, but by then Mickey had no time to concentrate on
anything but the fight.
