THE big right hand of Newcastle heavyweight John
Westgarth brought a sudden end to the 13-fight unbeaten
run of glamour-boy Glenn McCrory before a packed house
on Doug Bidwell's show at the Leisure Centre.
The fight was scheduled for 10 rounds, but once that
crashing right fist landed in the third round to send
McCrory staggering into a neutral corner, you knew there
was no way it was going to last the course.
IT looks like being one of the most intriguing domestic matches of the season when
welterweights Sylvester Mittee and Kostas Petrou meet in a double title clash in the
joint main event at the Alexandra Pavilion on Wednesday (September 18).
At stake will be Mittee's Commonwealth title and Petrou's British crown, and
the immediate prize will be a shot at Lloyd Honeghan's European title for the
winner.
FORMER sailor Brian Schumacher. ABA middleweight champion in
1981 and 1984. has some bad news for any prospective title hopefuls:
he intends to be around for a long time vet.
Schumacher, who quit the Navy earlier this year with over five years
service behind him, is back in Civvy Street eagerly awaiting the start of
a new season.
T H E on-off saga of the E u r o p e a n heavyweight title fight
