WELSH welterweight Colin Jones has decided to box on in an
attempt to earn a fourth crack at that elusive world title. It was felt he
might retire after being cut up in four rounds by WBA champ Don
Curry in January but he's back on a Frank Warren promotion at the
Alexandra Pavilion in September. See page 24
JESSE FERGUSON showed he's ready to take on some
of the better quality heavyweights as he battered out a
10th round win over Tony Anthony at Atlantic City to win
the ESPN TV title.
Ferguson, born in North Carolina but fighting out of Philadelphia,
wore down and completely outpunched his bigger,
heavier Detroit opponent in the June 20 bout.
Anthony, the fighter who floored Mike Weaver with an after
the bell punch from behind, only landed one noteworthy right and
the heart seemed to go out of him when Ferguson was still
standing.
JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ of Mexico retained his WBC junior
lightweight title with an overwhelming win over Roger
Mayweather, the former WBA champion, in the second of their
scheduled 12-rounder at the Riviera hotel and casino.
Referee Richard Steele intervened after two minutes 30
seconds of the round, with Mayweather looking shaky after
getting up quickly from his second knockdown of the round.
Mayweather was on the floor four times in all during the hectic
second round, but the first trip down was ruled a slip while
another time he was wrestled to the canvas.
FORMER triple world title challenger Colin Jones will be
back at the Alexandra Pavilion in September to have the
first of a short series of warm-up fights which, hopefully,
will lead to a fourth crack at one of the world titles.
Jones was beaten, with a very badly cut nose, in four
rounds last January by WBA champion Don Curr
