BOARD of Control General
Secretary Simon Block confirmed
SCOTT HARRISON applied for his
boxing licence to be reinstated on
November 14 but no decision has
yet been made.
Block said: "The chairman and I
were not present [at the meeting]
as we were attending the WBC
Convention but I can confirm that
the stewards decided during that
meeting that they required further
information from Scott Harrison in
order to consider his application."
WAYNE ALWAN, unbeaten in his
first two pro fights at middleweight,
was chosen to front My Budget Day
(November 21). Backed by the CBI
and Unite, Britain's biggest union,
and created by insurance giant AXA,
My Budget Day encourages people to
spend an hour a m o n t h looking at
their finances. Wayne was photographed
at the Pound for Pound
gym in Blackfriars.
VITALI KLITSCHKO is waiting in
the wings if either OLEG MASKAEV
or SAM PETER pulls out of their
scheduled February 2 WBC
heavyweight title fight at New
York's Madison Square Garden.
Should the fight, which has been
delayed several times already, go
ahead, Klitschko will be next in line
for the winner. After Klitschko will
be the turn of whoever wins a final
eliminator between VLADIMIR
VIRCHIS and JUAN CARLOS GOMEZ.
SIXTY years a f t e r he joined Grainger
Park Boys' Club in Newcastle as a
feisty 14-year-old, Norman Fawcett
has retired f r om boxing. He boxed
with some success for various clubs
around Newcastle before serving in
the Army. Back in civvy Street,
Norman joined Phil Fowler at West
End in the city as a coach, moving on
to Fawdon, Somervyl, Longbenton,
and N o r t h Benwell, his last club.
GREAT matchmaking by Tony Simms
and gritty fighters have become
hallmarks of TBS promotions. Their
latest offering at the Hippodrome in
this historic town was n o exception.
In the joint six-round main event
Lee Purdy (20) made it five wins in as
many starts with an emphatic but
never comfortable win over the fiery
Johnny Greaves f r om East Ham.
Greaves has a misleading record
of seven fights, seven losses. He fights
for money, not glory but manages to
give a crowd-pleasing display every
time he steps into the ring.
Purdy, f r om Colchester, has come
on at a tender age and is making good
progress.
