RIDDICK BOWE'S return to action,
scheduled for Kentucky tonight
(Friday August 24), was cancelled.
There were problems with the
local commission, according to
promoter Don Elbaum. Now Elbaum
will try to rearrange the match,
against ROCKY PHILLIPS, for late
September.
The fight appears jinxed. It had
been arranged four times and in
four different locations.
JAMES PAISLEY, the former Belfast
welterweight who broke his spine in
a recent road accident, was released
from hospital four weeks ago.
Paisley, who last fought in July
2006, spent 12 days in hospital.
He broke four vertebrae but is now
walking. He credits his fitness from
boxing for the recovery.
"I have to wear a corset around
my stomach," he said.
IN a thriller from start to finish,
Neil Sinclair came out of a two-month
retirement to box and punch his way to a
decisive 60-54 win over Latvia's rugged
Sergejs Savrinovics at the City Hall.
This six-rounder was part of a card
billed as "Battle on Leeside" by local
promoter Gary Hyde.
Sinclair was so happy with his win
that after his hand was raised by referee
Paul McCullagh he took the microphone,
moved to ring centre and gave fans his
rendition of the Oasis hit Wonderwall.
The former British welter champion,
now 30-6 (24), led all the way. While
Savrinovics (l0st 71bs) landed some •
good looping rights, "Sinky" generally
dominated the exchanges with fast left
jabs and solid follow-through rights to
both head and body.
FORMER convict Samson Sor Siriporn
retained her WBC women's light-flyweight
title with a comprehensive points
win over Anri Nakagawa from Japan
at a shopping mall on the outskirts of
the capital.
It was Samson's first fight since
being released from jail early as reward
for capturing the vacant belt with a
points victory over another Japanese,
Ayaka Miyano, in April.
Samson has improved since that
fight, but is still very much a work in
progress.
