THE lightweight corker between
triple champ JUAN DIAZ and WBO
interim holder MICHAEL KATSIDIS
is off. Golden Boy had won the
right to stage the fight, But Diaz's
contract with Don King contained a
clause stopping him working with
another promoter. King invoked
that clause, protecting his
investment but forcing the
cancellation of a potential classic.
Diaz has one fight left on his deal
with King.
FRANK MAL0NEY says if a match
for his charge JOHN FEWKES
against Manchester's JOHN
MURRAY comes off, Fewkes will
"stand Murray on his head."
The London promoter added:
"Fewkes is better prepared and has
had better fights. Who has Murray
fought?"
Murray's promoter Mick
Hennessy hit back, however, saying
they had offered the fight to
Fewkes in the past and that, "We
consider John to be one of the best
lightweights in Europe and would
have no problem taking that fight."
The Board have sent the
potential match, for Murray's
English belt, out to purse bids
(closing date: January 9), with it to
be staged by the end of April.
CARL FROCH'S WBC final
eliminator at super-middle, versus
Russia's DENNIS INKIN, is out for
voluntary negotiations. If an
agreement is not reached between
the rival promoters, then purse
offers will be opened on January 7.
Hennessy Sports, for Froch, and
Universum, for Inkin, are currently
in negotiations and Mick Hennessy
hopes to bring the fight to Britain.
"But we believe in Carl," said the
promoter. "Wherever the fight is,
he will knock Inkin out."
RESPECT and humility were the order
of the day on Monday (December 17)
at a press conference to formally
announce the super-feather match
between British champ Carl
Johanneson and Commonwealth boss
Kevin Mitchell.
The bout is set for York Hall, Bethnal
Green on January 12 on a Sports
•Network show and Mitchell's courteous
attitude must have been a nice change
for Carl after previous opponent
Michael Gomez's pre-fight antics last
time out.
IN a wide-open light-middleweight
division, Sechew Powell stands as
good a chance as any other. Brooklyn's
"Iron Horse" shone in an eliminator for
Cory Spinks' IBF crown, scoring two
knockdowns on his way to a fourthround
stoppage over Terrance
Cauthen. Official time was 2-19.
Powell, 28, can resurrect a career
many left for dead following mediocre
TV performances against Kassim Ouma
and Ishe Smith.
